🌿 Tree Basil – Ocimum gratissimum Overview

Tree Basil (Ocimum gratissimum) is a vigorous, highly aromatic basil species known for growing much larger and woodier than typical culinary basil. Also called African Basil, Clove Basil, or African Tree Basil, its fragrant leaves have a bold, spicy aroma often described as clove-like. Given plenty of warmth and light, it can develop into an impressive shrub-like herb rather than the small seasonal basil plant most people are accustomed to.

✨ Appearance

  • Broad to oval green leaves with lightly toothed edges
  • Highly aromatic foliage
  • Upright, strongly branching growth habit
  • Stems become increasingly woody as the plant matures
  • Can develop into a substantial shrub-like plant in warm climates
  • Produces upright flower spikes with numerous small flowers
  • Flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinators outdoors

☀️ Light

  • Loves bright light and sunshine
  • Outdoors, performs best in full sun to partial sun
  • Indoors, provide your brightest sunny window or a strong grow light
  • Several hours of direct sunlight encourage sturdy, compact growth
  • Insufficient light can cause thin, stretched stems and sparse foliage
  • Gradually acclimate indoor-grown plants before moving them into strong outdoor sun

💧 Water

  • Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil begin to dry
  • Water thoroughly and allow excess moisture to drain
  • Prefers relatively consistent moisture during active growth
  • Established plants can tolerate brief periods of dryness
  • Container-grown plants may need more frequent watering during hot summer weather

⚠️ Watering Warning
Tree Basil appreciates regular moisture while actively growing, but don't keep the roots constantly soggy. Don't water on a strict schedule—check the soil first. Water when the upper portion begins to dry and allow excess moisture to drain. Constantly saturated soil can lead to yellowing and root problems, while prolonged severe drought may cause wilting and leaf drop.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Loves warm, tropical conditions
  • Ideal temperature: approximately 65–90°F
  • Handles summer heat well when adequately watered
  • Comfortable in average to moderate humidity
  • Appreciates good airflow
  • Sensitive to frost and prolonged cold
  • Container plants can be brought indoors for winter in colder climates

🌱 Soil

  • Prefers fertile, well-draining soil
    • Quality potting soil or coco coir
    • Perlite or pumice for drainage
    • Compost or organic matter can be incorporated for outdoor plants
  • Avoid dense soil that remains waterlogged
  • Containers should always provide good drainage

🌿 Growth & Care

  • Fast-growing under warm, sunny conditions
  • Can become considerably larger than common sweet basil
  • Pinch growing tips when young to encourage branching
  • Regular harvesting helps maintain a full, bushy plant
  • Pruning can keep its naturally shrub-like growth manageable in containers
  • Flower spikes can be removed to encourage continued foliage production or left for pollinators
  • Easily propagated from stem cuttings or grown from seed
  • Fertilize lightly during active growth

🐾 Pet Safety

  • Reliable pet-specific safety information for Ocimum gratissimum is limited
  • It's safest to discourage cats and dogs from consuming significant amounts
  • Concentrated extracts and essential oils are very different from the living plant and should not be given or applied to pets without veterinary guidance

💚 Why Plant Lovers Love It

  • Incredible spicy, clove-like fragrance
  • Grows much larger than ordinary basil
  • Fast-growing and responds beautifully to pruning
  • Useful aromatic foliage
  • Flowers attract pollinators outdoors
  • Easy to propagate
  • Makes an unusual addition to an herb collection
  • It's basically what happens when regular basil decides being an herb isn't ambitious enough and it would rather become a tree. 😂🌳🌿

Traditional & Culinary Use Note: Ocimum gratissimum has a long history of culinary and traditional use in parts of Africa, Asia, and other tropical regions. The leaves are used as an aromatic herb in some cuisines, but flavor and chemical composition can vary among plants and growing regions. Traditional medicinal uses should not be presented as proven medical treatments, and concentrated extracts or essential oils require substantially more caution than ordinary culinary use of the leaves.
