🤍🌿 Begonia maculata – Polka Dot Begonia Overview

Begonia maculata, commonly known as the Polka Dot Begonia, is an eye-catching cane Begonia famous for its elongated, angel-wing-shaped leaves covered in bright silver-white spots. Flip a leaf over and you'll find a gorgeous red to burgundy underside, making this plant just as beautiful from below as it is from above. With the right conditions, it can also produce delicate clusters of white to pale pink flowers.

✨ Appearance

  • Elongated, asymmetrical leaves with an angel-wing shape
  • Deep olive to rich green upper foliage
  • Distinctive silver-white polka dots scattered across each leaf
  • Striking red to burgundy leaf undersides
  • Upright, bamboo-like cane stems
  • Can develop into a tall, bushy statement plant
  • Produces hanging clusters of white to pale pink flowers under favorable conditions

☀️ Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light
  • Plenty of filtered light helps maintain strong growth and beautiful coloration
  • Gentle morning sun can be beneficial
  • Avoid harsh direct afternoon sunlight, which can scorch the foliage
  • Lower light may result in stretched growth and fewer flowers
  • Performs well under grow lights

💧 Water

  • Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry slightly between waterings
  • Water thoroughly and allow excess moisture to drain
  • Prefers relatively consistent moisture without remaining soggy
  • Water at soil level when possible rather than repeatedly wetting the foliage
  • Reduce watering somewhat during periods of slower growth

⚠️ Watering Warning
Polka Dot Begonia likes consistent moisture, but wet soil is one of the quickest ways to make it unhappy. Don't water on a strict schedule—check the soil first. If the upper portion still feels damp, wait. Constantly saturated soil can cause yellowing, stem problems, and root rot, while repeatedly allowing it to become extremely dry can cause crispy leaf edges and leaf drop.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal temperature: 65–80°F
  • Prefers moderate to high humidity
  • Humidity around 50–60% or higher is beneficial
  • Protect from temperatures below approximately 55°F
  • Keep away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes
  • Good airflow is important, especially in higher humidity
  • Avoid constantly misting the leaves; increasing humidity around the plant is preferable

🌱 Soil

  • Prefers a light, airy, well-draining mix
    • Quality indoor potting soil or coco coir
    • Perlite or pumice
    • Fine orchid bark
  • Soil should retain some moisture without becoming waterlogged
  • Always use a container with good drainage

🌿 Growth & Care

  • Moderate to fast grower under favorable conditions
  • Cane-type growth can become tall and dramatic
  • Pinching or pruning growing tips encourages branching and a fuller plant
  • Taller stems may eventually benefit from staking or support
  • Easily propagated from stem cuttings containing healthy nodes
  • Fertilize lightly during the active growing season
  • Rotate periodically for balanced growth
  • Avoid frequently handling the leaves, as Begonia foliage can be delicate

🐾 Pet Safety

  • Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested
  • Begonias contain soluble calcium oxalates
  • Underground portions generally contain higher concentrations
  • Ingestion may cause mouth irritation, drooling, vomiting, or digestive upset
  • Keep away from pets and children who may chew plants

🤍 Why Collectors Love It

  • Incredible naturally polka-dotted foliage
  • Gorgeous burgundy-red leaf undersides
  • Dramatic angel-wing leaf shape
  • Beautiful flowers when mature and happy
  • Fast-growing compared with many specialty Begonias
  • Easily propagated
  • Looks like someone painstakingly painted silver dots onto every leaf—but nope, Begonia maculata just decided to be that extra. 😂🤍🌿

Plant Nerd Note: Although it's sometimes casually called a Polka Dot Plant, Begonia maculata shouldn't be confused with the other houseplant commonly called Polka Dot Plant, Hypoestes phyllostachya. For your website, “Begonia maculata – Polka Dot Begonia” is a clearer name and helps customers distinguish between the two.
