🌿 Elephant Staghorn Fern Overview

The Platycerium elephantotis, commonly called the Elephant Staghorn Fern, is a rare and dramatic tropical fern admired for its massive, broad fronds that resemble elephant ears rather than the antler-like fronds of typical staghorn ferns. Native to tropical Africa, this plant is a collector favorite and makes an incredible mounted or hanging display plant.

Appearance

  • Large, rounded elephant-ear shaped fertile fronds

  • Velvety, soft green texture

  • Distinct shield fronds at the base that protect roots

  • Can grow 2–4 feet wide indoors when mature

  • Creates a bold, sculptural look when mounted

☀️ Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light

  • Can tolerate moderate light

  • Avoid harsh direct sun which can scorch fronds

💧 Water

  • Water when the mount or moss begins to dry out

  • If mounted, soak or mist regularly

  • Avoid letting water sit in the crown

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal temperatures: 65–85°F

  • Loves high humidity (60%+)

  • Benefits from humidifiers or regular misting indoors

🌱 Growing Style

  • Often grown mounted on wood or boards with sphagnum moss

  • Can also be grown in hanging baskets with loose, well-draining mix

  • Slow to moderate growth rate

🌿 Care Tips

  • Fertilize lightly during spring and summer
