🤍🌿 Jasmine 'Maid of Orleans' – Jasminum sambac Overview

Jasmine 'Maid of Orleans' (Jasminum sambac 'Maid of Orleans') is a beautifully fragrant tropical jasmine treasured for its intensely scented white flowers. Also known as Arabian Jasmine, this compact, shrubby vine produces delicate blooms that open bright white and may soften to creamy white as they age. Its incredible fragrance, glossy foliage, and repeat-blooming potential make it a wonderful choice for a sunny indoor space or warm-season patio.

✨ Appearance

  • Glossy, rich green foliage
  • Produces highly fragrant white flowers
  • Flowers typically have a simple to semi-double form
  • Blooms may fade from bright white to creamy white as they age
  • Compact, bushy to somewhat vining growth habit
  • Regular pruning can maintain a fuller, rounded shape
  • Can bloom repeatedly during warm, bright growing conditions

☀️ Light

  • Loves very bright light
  • Several hours of direct sun can encourage stronger growth and flowering
  • Indoors, place near a bright south- or west-facing window or under a strong grow light
  • Gentle outdoor morning sun is excellent
  • Plants grown in insufficient light may produce plenty of foliage but few flowers
  • Gradually acclimate indoor-grown plants before placing them in strong outdoor sunlight

💧 Water

  • Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil begin to dry
  • Water thoroughly and allow excess moisture to drain
  • Prefers relatively consistent moisture during active growth and flowering
  • Avoid allowing the entire root ball to remain completely dry for long periods
  • Reduce watering somewhat during cooler temperatures or slower growth

⚠️ Watering Warning
Maid of Orleans Jasmine appreciates consistent moisture, but it doesn't want soggy roots. Don't water on a strict schedule—check the soil first. Water when the upper portion begins to dry, then let excess moisture drain completely. Constantly saturated soil can lead to yellowing leaves and root rot, while severe drought may cause buds, flowers, and leaves to drop.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal temperature: approximately 65–85°F
  • Loves warm conditions
  • Appreciates moderate humidity
  • Protect from cold temperatures and frost
  • Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes
  • Good airflow is beneficial
  • Can enjoy the outdoors during warm weather but should be brought inside before temperatures become too cold

🌱 Soil

  • Prefers rich but well-draining soil
    • Quality indoor potting soil or coco coir
    • Perlite or pumice
    • Fine orchid bark for additional aeration
  • Slightly acidic to neutral conditions work well
  • Always use a container with good drainage

🌿 Growth & Care

  • Moderate to fast grower under warm, bright conditions
  • Regular pinching and pruning encourages fuller, bushier growth
  • Pruning after a flush of flowers can help maintain its shape
  • Fertilize during the active growing and flowering season
  • Can be grown as a compact shrub or allowed to develop longer stems
  • Can be propagated from stem cuttings
  • Plenty of light is one of the biggest keys to encouraging repeat flowering
  • Avoid unnecessary relocation once buds are developing, as sudden environmental changes can contribute to bud drop

🐾 Pet Safety

  • True jasmine in the genus Jasminum, including Jasminum sambac, is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs
  • Eating large quantities of any plant material can still cause mild digestive upset

🤍 Why Plant Lovers Love It

  • Absolutely incredible fragrance
  • Beautiful white flowers
  • Glossy evergreen-looking foliage
  • Can bloom repeatedly under good conditions
  • Works indoors or as a warm-season patio plant
  • Responds beautifully to pruning
  • Pet-friendly
  • One tiny flower can perfume an entire area—this is definitely a plant you notice with your nose before you notice with your eyes. 🤍🌿

Plant Nerd Note: 'Maid of Orleans' is a cultivar of Jasminum sambac, commonly called Arabian Jasmine or Sambac Jasmine. Jasminum sambac flowers have a long history of cultural and traditional use, particularly in South and Southeast Asia. Despite the name “Arabian Jasmine,” the species is believed to have originated in tropical Asia.

Also, don't confuse true Jasminum with plants such as Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) or Madagascar Jasmine (Stephanotis floribunda). They're called jasmine because of their fragrant flowers, but they belong to completely different genera.
