🌿 String of Frogs Overview

String of Frogs (Ficus pumila 'Quercifolia') is an adorable miniature trailing plant prized for its tiny, uniquely shaped leaves that resemble little frog feet or miniature oak leaves. Also known as Oak Leaf Creeping Fig, this charming plant creates a dense mat of delicate vines and is perfect for terrariums, fairy gardens, hanging displays, and small decorative planters.

✨ Appearance

  • Tiny, deeply lobed leaves resembling little frog feet or oak leaves
  • Rich green foliage with a delicate, textured appearance
  • Thin, creeping or trailing stems
  • Creates a dense, lush mat as it grows
  • Can trail from containers or climb surfaces using tiny aerial roots
  • Leaves remain much smaller than those of standard Creeping Fig

☀️ Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light
  • Can tolerate moderate indirect light
  • Bright filtered light encourages dense, compact growth
  • Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate foliage

💧 Water

  • Keep soil consistently lightly moist
  • Allow the very top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings
  • Does not appreciate completely drying out for extended periods
  • Avoid soggy or waterlogged soil, which can lead to root rot

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal temperature: 60–80°F
  • Prefers moderate to high humidity
  • Especially well suited to humid terrariums
  • Protect from cold drafts and freezing temperatures
  • Crispy leaf edges can be a sign that conditions are too dry

🌱 Soil

  • Prefers a rich, light, well-draining potting mix
    • Potting soil or coco coir
    • Perlite or pumice
    • Fine orchid bark for additional aeration
  • Soil should retain some moisture without remaining waterlogged

🌿 Growth & Care

  • Moderate to fast grower under ideal conditions
  • Excellent choice for terrariums and fairy gardens
  • Can be grown trailing or allowed to creep and climb
  • Prune regularly to maintain its desired shape and encourage fuller growth
  • Easily propagated from stem cuttings containing healthy nodes
  • Aerial roots may attach to nearby surfaces as the plant climbs

🐾 Pet Safety

  • Best considered toxic to pets if ingested
  • Like other Ficus, its milky sap can irritate the mouth, skin, and digestive system

💚 Why Collectors Love It

  • Absolutely adorable miniature "frog-foot" leaves
  • Beautiful trailing and creeping growth habit
  • Perfect for terrariums and fairy gardens
  • Quickly creates a lush, miniature landscape
  • Easy to propagate and shape
