🩷🌿 Variegated String of Hearts Overview

Variegated String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii 'Variegata') is a gorgeous trailing succulent-like plant loved for its tiny heart-shaped leaves decorated in shades of green, cream, white, and pink. Its delicate vines can cascade several feet long, creating a beautiful waterfall of colorful hearts. With plenty of light, the cream-colored portions can develop stunning blush-pink tones, making this one of the prettiest trailing plants around.

✨ Appearance

  • Small, heart-shaped leaves growing along thin trailing vines
  • Beautiful green, cream, and white variegation
  • Leaf edges often develop soft pink to vibrant rosy-pink coloration
  • Undersides may display purple or burgundy tones
  • Every leaf develops a slightly different pattern
  • Long, delicate vines can eventually reach several feet
  • May produce unusual small tubular flowers on mature plants
  • Develops small tubers along the vines and beneath the soil as it matures

☀️ Light

  • Prefers very bright, indirect light
  • A few hours of gentle morning or late-day sun can encourage stronger pink coloration
  • Bright light helps maintain compact growth and beautiful variegation
  • Insufficient light can cause stretched vines with larger spaces between leaves
  • Avoid suddenly exposing the plant to intense afternoon sun, which can scorch the lighter portions of the foliage

💧 Water

  • Allow the soil to dry almost completely between waterings
  • Water thoroughly and allow excess moisture to drain away
  • Its leaves and tubers store water, making it fairly drought-tolerant
  • Water less frequently during cooler months or periods of slower growth
  • Avoid constantly damp soil

⚠️ Watering Warning
Variegated String of Hearts would much rather be a little too dry than too wet. Don't water on a strict schedule—check the soil first. If it still feels damp, wait. Constantly wet soil can quickly cause yellowing leaves, mushy tubers, and root rot. When you're unsure whether it's ready for water, giving it another day or two is usually safer than watering too soon.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal temperature: 60–85°F
  • Adapts well to average household humidity
  • Does not require high humidity
  • Protect from freezing temperatures
  • Appreciates good airflow

🌱 Soil

  • Prefers a light, fast-draining mix
    • Cactus or succulent soil
    • Perlite or pumice
    • Fine orchid bark may be added for additional aeration
  • A container with good drainage is essential

🌿 Growth & Care

  • Moderate to fast grower under bright conditions
  • Perfect for hanging baskets and elevated shelves
  • Pruning long vines can encourage a fuller appearance
  • Easily propagated from stem cuttings or its small aerial tubers
  • Vines can also be laid across the surface of the soil to encourage rooting and create a fuller pot
  • Fertilize lightly during the active growing season
  • Rotate periodically so the top of the pot receives plenty of light and doesn't become sparse

🐾 Pet Safety

  • Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs

🩷 Why Collectors Love It

  • Adorable heart-shaped leaves
  • Gorgeous pink, cream, white, and green coloration
  • Beautiful long cascading vines
  • Relatively drought-tolerant and easy to care for
  • Easy and fun to propagate
  • Pet-friendly
  • And really…it's a cascading vine covered in tiny pink hearts. It was basically designed to be irresistible. 🩷🌿

Plant Nerd Note: The pink coloration is especially noticeable on the creamy-white portions of the foliage and can become stronger with good light. However, variegation naturally varies from vine to vine. If a stem begins producing completely green growth, pruning that section can help prevent the faster-growing green growth from eventually dominating the plant.
